Android 4.4 KitKat comes to Nexus S and Nexus One, unofficially of course

Despite Google’s decision to leave the Galaxy Nexus out of the KitKat action, it didn’t take long for the developer community to fill in the holes and release reasonably stable ports for the device.

Think that’s impressive? Thanks to the efforts of Android modding community, it’s now possible to get KitKat on both the Nexus S and even the now-ancient Nexus One! Yes really.

Nexus S gets the sweet taste of KitKat

For those interested in testing out KitKat on the Nexus S, you’ll want to turn your attention to the KitKat alpha 3 ROM developed by XDA member cn.fyodor. This ROM is essentially stock Android with few modifications made to it.

According to most of the commenters over at XDA, the ROM is reasonably stable for an alpha build and actually performs relatively well considering the device’s older hardware.

Of course it’s not exactly ‘bug free’. In particular, some of the Google apps are said to not work properly. The device does seem to work fine when it comes to calling, browsing and most other tasks though. While the handset might be able to work as a daily driver if you’re willing to put up with a few glitches, it’s still far from ready for prime-time.

Bringing KitKat to the Nexus One

For those that still have an old Nexus One lying around, developer texasice recently unveiled the new Evervolv KitKat 4.4 ROM for the Nexus One. This customized ROM includes a theme manager and a few other tweaks, though there is a toolbox that allows you to disable the added features to get a near-stock experience.

So how well does the Evervolv ROM run? Most reports suggest it operates fairly well though there are some missing features including no support for video recording, some general camera bugs, and some minor graphic glitches. There’s also a problem that makes ART unusable on the device (causes bootloops).

Another issue is that the ROM takes up a LOT of room! Considering the Nexus One has just 512MB of storage (with microSD for expansion), the ROM removes a few components and requires you to replace the bootloader with BlackRose in order to get Evervolv to work.

Basically you should avoid the Nexus One ROM unless you’re looking for a challenge. That said, after you go through the hassles to get it working, it actually runs rather well — minus some of the broken features.

Wrap Up

As you can tell, neither of these ROMs are exactly ultra-stable but it’s still pretty cool to see that even relatively ancient hardware can in fact run KitKat, even if there are some obvious glitches at this time. Not only does this speak to volumes about Google’s claims that KitKat has been optimized for weaker hardware, it also further proves that if there’s a way, the Android modding community will always find it.

To learn more or even download the Nexus S ROM, you’ll want to click here. For the Evervolv ROM, head here. Keep in mind that things can and do go wrong when it comes to flashing custom ROMs, so proceed at your own risk.

What do you think of the new Nexus S and Nexus One ROMs, impressed?

DROID ULTRA and Mini Now Available in White From Verizon

Earlier in the week, we saw press renders leak for both the DROID ULTRA and DROID Mini in white, with sources of ours telling us to expect both devices to arrive on Black Friday. We’re now in the early hours of Black Friday and both devices have popped up in white on Verizon’s website.

You aren’t looking at a price drop or anything other than a color change, but both can indeed be had in white. The DROID ULTRA still runs $99.99 on-contract; the Mini is $49.99.

We reviewed the ULTRA shortly after it launched, finding it comparable to the Moto X outside of a cheesy build quality that collects fingerprints with the best of them. But other than build and design, it does all of the things we love so much about the Moto X, only with a slightly bigger display.

[New App] Virgin TV Anywhere

Virgin Media TV customers in the UK, you can now watch your TiVo live television service or recorded programs on your Android device, anywhere! Anywhere with a WiFi connection, that is. Assuming that you’ve got a phone or tablet running Android 2.3 through 4.3, but not KitKat 4.4. Oh, and you can’t be rooted. Have fun!

All kidding aside, there seem to be some serious issues with Virgin’s new TV Anywhere app for Android, starting with the aforesaid KitKat support. Other early reviews are decrying the lack of support for older, non-TiVo Virgin DVRs and the rooted device restriction, which American football fans can probably sympathize with. Others want to watch TV over the mobile network, and again, this is a common restriction when it comes to live TV streaming. Device support is spotty as well: the Nexus 5, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy S4 are showing as incompatible for me, though your results may vary.
If you can get over all that, Virgin TV Anywhere offers a full program guide and remote recording, even when you’re on 3G. The app also works as a basic remote for the TiVo box to make searching for shows easier. The interface isn’t great, but it does at least follow the general look of the TiVo menus. Naturally you’ll need to be a Virgin Media TV customer to log in to the app.

Gravity Screen Pro – On / Off v1.73.1

Current Version: 1.73.1

Requires Android: 2.2 and up

Category:   Tools

v1.73.1 update: – – –  v1.73.3 – – –

Fixed: – crashed if the app was started in landscape mode. Let me know if still experiencing any crash. – infinite timeout If the app does not work properly after the update, try to re-install it to solve the problem.

Overview: – Install it only if you have difficulty to Unlock the Free version by In-app Billing or the Free version does not work for you for some reason. –

Using your phone often? Tired of the On-Off switching? This app turns automatically your screen off when you put your phone into your pocket or onto a table and turn the screen on when you take it out or up. No need to touch any button and you are ready to go.

It monitors the orientation of the device through the gravity sensor. When your phone is pointing downward by its top, below a certain angle, it’s likely to be out of use. In this situation the proximity sensor is activated to determine if it is covered. If yes, the screen turns off because probably you placed the phone into your pocket or onto a table. To keep the battery usage low the program turns on the proximity sensor only when it’s really necessary. Moreover, when it turns your screen off and the proximity sensor is covered it puts your phone into deep sleep state to save as much energy as possible.

– Pocket Sensor: Recognizes if your phone is in your pocket. – Table Sensor: Detects your phone is lying on a table and turns the screen off. – Turn Screen On by Motion: If the screen is off and it’s facing up the device can be woken up by any movements, for example lift up by hand. – Keep Screen On by Motion: It’s a Screebl like feature but it’s relying on the small movements you are doing by your hand while holding the phone. If small motions are detected while the screen is facing up the feature keeps the screen on because it can be suspected that the phone is held and probably you are reading something. If the phone is steady the normal screen timeout will apply in any position you leave your device. – Exclude Apps option: The app pauses itself anytime if selected app is running, it’ll resume when you close the app. Useful when playing games etc. – Tasker, Llama, Locale supported by plug-in.

It should be not significant. I experienced about 6 per cent extra consumption on the test device. However it can be much higher by often using the Turn Screen On by Motion feature. Thus, keep your phone face down if you want to save energy.

On some devices (e.g. HTC One) the alarm clock is switched off by the app after it had gone off! Please check if it’s the case for you. If, yes, use a third party app, for example:

– The app was not widely tested. Hopefully it will work fine for you. But, if you experience any issue or just have a question, please email me.

In the Pro version the screen can be turned on by motion up to 16 hours instead of 15 minutes. Also, in the Pro version the Table sensor is more accurate.

Q: The screen not always turns off when I put my phone into my pocket, why? A:The proximity sensor not always accurate. It can fail recognizing some materials specially if they are very close to it. If it happens to you often, you can activate the False Turn-On Protection feature which effectively reduces the number of accidental wake-ups.

Q: I’m experiencing high battery usage, why? A: The app should use about 6 percent extra energy per day if you are not using too much the Turn Screen On by Motion feature, for example keeping your phone face down when it’s on a table. Moreover, please, keep in mind that the android en-built battery consumption measurement can show much higher results if it’s based on a short period of time.

Q: The Turn Screen On by Motion feature does not work for me, why? A: It’s likely that your device is stopping the acceleration sensor when the screen goes off and we can do nothing about it unfortunately. More info:
