[New App] Virgin TV Anywhere

Virgin Media TV customers in the UK, you can now watch your TiVo live television service or recorded programs on your Android device, anywhere! Anywhere with a WiFi connection, that is. Assuming that you’ve got a phone or tablet running Android 2.3 through 4.3, but not KitKat 4.4. Oh, and you can’t be rooted. Have fun!

All kidding aside, there seem to be some serious issues with Virgin’s new TV Anywhere app for Android, starting with the aforesaid KitKat support. Other early reviews are decrying the lack of support for older, non-TiVo Virgin DVRs and the rooted device restriction, which American football fans can probably sympathize with. Others want to watch TV over the mobile network, and again, this is a common restriction when it comes to live TV streaming. Device support is spotty as well: the Nexus 5, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy S4 are showing as incompatible for me, though your results may vary.
If you can get over all that, Virgin TV Anywhere offers a full program guide and remote recording, even when you’re on 3G. The app also works as a basic remote for the TiVo box to make searching for shows easier. The interface isn’t great, but it does at least follow the general look of the TiVo menus. Naturally you’ll need to be a Virgin Media TV customer to log in to the app.

Gravity Screen Pro – On / Off v1.73.1

Current Version: 1.73.1

Requires Android: 2.2 and up

Category:   Tools

v1.73.1 update: – – –  v1.73.3 – – –

Fixed: – crashed if the app was started in landscape mode. Let me know if still experiencing any crash. – infinite timeout If the app does not work properly after the update, try to re-install it to solve the problem.

Overview: – Install it only if you have difficulty to Unlock the Free version by In-app Billing or the Free version does not work for you for some reason. –

Using your phone often? Tired of the On-Off switching? This app turns automatically your screen off when you put your phone into your pocket or onto a table and turn the screen on when you take it out or up. No need to touch any button and you are ready to go.

It monitors the orientation of the device through the gravity sensor. When your phone is pointing downward by its top, below a certain angle, it’s likely to be out of use. In this situation the proximity sensor is activated to determine if it is covered. If yes, the screen turns off because probably you placed the phone into your pocket or onto a table. To keep the battery usage low the program turns on the proximity sensor only when it’s really necessary. Moreover, when it turns your screen off and the proximity sensor is covered it puts your phone into deep sleep state to save as much energy as possible.

– Pocket Sensor: Recognizes if your phone is in your pocket. – Table Sensor: Detects your phone is lying on a table and turns the screen off. – Turn Screen On by Motion: If the screen is off and it’s facing up the device can be woken up by any movements, for example lift up by hand. – Keep Screen On by Motion: It’s a Screebl like feature but it’s relying on the small movements you are doing by your hand while holding the phone. If small motions are detected while the screen is facing up the feature keeps the screen on because it can be suspected that the phone is held and probably you are reading something. If the phone is steady the normal screen timeout will apply in any position you leave your device. – Exclude Apps option: The app pauses itself anytime if selected app is running, it’ll resume when you close the app. Useful when playing games etc. – Tasker, Llama, Locale supported by plug-in.

It should be not significant. I experienced about 6 per cent extra consumption on the test device. However it can be much higher by often using the Turn Screen On by Motion feature. Thus, keep your phone face down if you want to save energy.

On some devices (e.g. HTC One) the alarm clock is switched off by the app after it had gone off! Please check if it’s the case for you. If, yes, use a third party app, for example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vp.alarmClockPlusDock

– The app was not widely tested. Hopefully it will work fine for you. But, if you experience any issue or just have a question, please email me.

In the Pro version the screen can be turned on by motion up to 16 hours instead of 15 minutes. Also, in the Pro version the Table sensor is more accurate.

Q: The screen not always turns off when I put my phone into my pocket, why? A:The proximity sensor not always accurate. It can fail recognizing some materials specially if they are very close to it. If it happens to you often, you can activate the False Turn-On Protection feature which effectively reduces the number of accidental wake-ups.

Q: I’m experiencing high battery usage, why? A: The app should use about 6 percent extra energy per day if you are not using too much the Turn Screen On by Motion feature, for example keeping your phone face down when it’s on a table. Moreover, please, keep in mind that the android en-built battery consumption measurement can show much higher results if it’s based on a short period of time.

Q: The Turn Screen On by Motion feature does not work for me, why? A: It’s likely that your device is stopping the acceleration sensor when the screen goes off and we can do nothing about it unfortunately. More info: http://www.saltwebsites.com/2012/android-accelerometers-screen-off

[New App] SidePlayer | SidePlayer Pro

If you’re listening to music while using your phone or tablet for something else, you don’t always want to stop what you’re doing to fiddle with the song. If you’re in a game, for example, you may have to exit to the home screen just to get to your music controls, but SidePlayer offers an alternative. It pops a small control panel out from the edge of the screen when you need it, and hides it when you don’t.

SidePlayer ties into various music players like Google Play Music, PowerAmp, n7 player, and several OEM music apps. Just drag in from the right edge of the screen and the controls appear. Drag back, and they recede. This works in any app, even a full-screen game. The free version of the app is limited to this basic functionality, but the $1.75 pro edition includes themes, metadata display, more layouts, active area positioning, and more.

This app doesn’t make a lot of sense for devices that can show the notification shade in full-screen apps (like Samsung devices and stock KitKat), but it could be great for others. You can give it a shot for free, so why not?

[New App] Cox Contour

When it comes to cable, there’s a lot not to like. The monthly bill continues to go up, and no matter how many channels you add, there’s still never anything good on to watch. This somehow manages to be the case even while many shows are still exclusively available on cable. Yet as frustrating as the major providers may be, there is one trend that I can readily get behind, and that’s the addition of Android apps meant to supplement their traditional service. Cox Communications has added another offering into the mix, Cox Contour, which provides access to over 100 channels and on-demand content.

This isn’t Cox’s first Android app to support streaming content, but this opens up access to significantly more channels than Cox TV Connect provides. Unlike that alternative, though, Contour only works on a select few Android tablets. Both require you to be on your home WiFi connection to have any access at all.

The app is available for free to subscribers who have bundled Cox Essential, Advanced, or Contour TV with the company’s Preferred, Premier, or Ultimate Internet service. You will need a Cox User ID and password in order to sign in. Get started by grabbing the app from the Play Store below.

[New App] FlightTrack 5

FlightTrack is not a newcomer to Android, but this particular version of the app is. FlightTrack 5 is a totally redesigned experience that’s being released in time to celebrate the developer’s fifth anniversary. You can join in on the festivities by taking advantage of the introductory sale price for FlightTrack 5.

This app is designed to help you survive the horror of air travel. FlightTrack 5 does pretty much what the name says – it tracks flights and offers real time alerts whenever anything changes. You can also add multiple travelers who are on different flights, and keep tabs on who is departing and arriving at what time. The map view will show you live flight path data when available, and will overlay weather information. FlightTrack 5 is compatible with 3,000 airports and 1,400 airlines worldwide.

The Android version of the app includes a few nifty extras including sharing trips via NFC, a Dashclock extension, homescreen widget, and a live wallpaper. The app’s design also looks pretty nice. You can pick up FlighTrack 5 for $2.99 before the end of the month. After that is goes up to $4.99.

[New App] LEGO® TV

If building blocks are still the first things to come to mind when you hear the word “LEGO”, it might just be a sign of your age. LEGO video games have been hitting the market for over a decade now, and they’ve been good enough to appeal to kids and adults alike. Of course, if the brand has spawned games, it’s also inspired television shows and movies. The latest LEGO app to enter the Play Store provides direct access to the official LEGO YouTube Channel and select downloadable movies, so you, or your kid, can stream and download LEGO content all day long.

LEGO TV is filled with such goodies as the Chima, Ninjago, Friends, and Hero Factory shows along with animations based on such universally known brands as Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and the DC/Marvel universes. Much of the content consists of clips and trailers, but there are longer movies up for download as well. So if you’re ready for a laugh, hit the widget below.

[New App] Black Friday Deal Finder 2013

Can you believe the holiday shopping season is almost upon us, pressing down with the weight of a thousand suns and squeezing the last bit of cash out of your bank account? Black Friday deals can be a little misleading – not everything is actually a deal anymore. The new SlickDeals Black Friday app is now in the Play Store to help you save some cash later this month. If that’s not enough, FatWallet dropped its Black Friday app in the store a few weeks ago.

The SlickDeals app has plenty of features, including notifications of new and updated ad leaks, full scanned ads, filtering, and discussion boards. The design is not very Android-y, but it still looks pretty good. Note, this is separate from the regular SlickDeals app, which lists all the deals posted to the site. The FatWallet app looks a little less polished, but it’s not the quality of the app that matters, right?

Both apps are free in Google Play and already brimming with Black Friday deals. With both the big players in deal-finding on Android, you should be able to plan ahead a bit better and not end up storming the doors at Best Buy at 5AM.

[New App] Camera Awesome

Sometimes a smartphone comes with a crappy camera. Other times, it just comes with crappy software. The good thing is that there are no shortage of compelling camera apps to choose to from, and today, there’s one more. SmugMug’s Camera Awesome has made its way over to Android after amassing over 20 million downloads on the Apple App Store and averaging a near perfect 4.5 star rating.

Camera Awesome is packed with features, offering users an HDR mode, the ability to take panorama shots, and a high-speed burst. With anti-shake video image stabilization, candid recordings need not look as spontaneous as they are. The app also offers limited editing options, including the ability to selectively choose where on an image a filter should be applied.

The app offers additional functionality on Tegra 4 devices, and it even comes pre-installed on the Tegra Note 7. Exclusive features include always-on HDR, object tracking, and pressure-sensitive stylus support. Many non-Tegra products don’t just lose out on these features, though. They miss out entirely, as device support is pretty limited.

Camera Awesome is available for $2.99, and it’s just raring to help Android users take better mobile photos. Get it below.
